Q&A With Joe Cross — Following Up on Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead 2!

Since Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead was released in 2010, I’ve been humbled by the number of people who have been inspired to change their diets, lose weight, and get off medications. I’ve seen people who have lived off processed foods their whole life transform by falling in love with the power of plants after they Rebooted [gone on a juice fast] and experienced the effect that eating more fruits and vegetables has on their health. Consuming 100% plants, which is what you do on a Reboot, is a powerful way to hydro-boost your system to regain or sustain your vitality, lose weight, fight disease and kick-start healthy habits. It’s the staying healthy after a Reboot that’s the hard part.

That’s what sparked my desire to release a second film. In Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead 2 I travel the world on a mission to find out how we can be healthy in an unhealthy world. I also wanted to revisit the people we met in the first film to share their updates, and introduce us to more families by going into the homes of those, young and old, who have gained life-changing benefits from eating more plants.

What’s your favorite part of the filmmaking process?

For my first film, it was initially the accountability. Having that camera focused on me for my entire 60-day Reboot certainly helped me remain steadfast to achieve my goals. Now I’d say my favorite part is being out in the field and meeting people. I’ll talk to anyone and everyone. Some are into it and some aren’t, but that’s all part of the fun. Working with my production team on the editing is also quite a fulfilling experience – stepping foot into the editing room after weeks of filming to watch it all come together is pretty surreal, but oh can it be challenging! What do you say to people who have been inspired by your story to change their own habits?

“You inspire me.” My journey maybe opened their eyes to the powerful effect that improving diet can have on your health, but it takes their inner strength and determination to commit to becoming CEO of their own health. I’m constantly inspired by their fortitude. Whether they Reboot for one day or 60, the journey is about an essential life shift, a complete readjustment that will take you outside your comfort zone, and it’s incredible that so many are able to join it.

I am no oracle and I’m far from perfect, but I am very happy that my story, and many of the other success stories that have been generated by Rebooters all over the world, have inspired others to embark on the journey.

What does your diet look like now?

I drink juice every day, I eat tons of fruits and vegetables, and I eat mostly plant-based foods. For dinner, I’ll enjoy grass-fed beef on occasion or wild fish and I always load my plate with lots of vegetables. I’m not perfect, I still enjoy my favorite chocolate ice cream and a burger here and there, but 80% of the time, I eat a well-balanced, high-nutrient diet.

My theory is pretty simple. No need to label how you eat – vegan, vegetarian, pescetarian, paleo, etc., just eat and drink more fruits and vegetables, consume lots of nuts, beans, and seeds and if you decide to eat animal products like I do, make sure it’s grass-fed, free-range, organic, and/or wild, and enjoy those in moderation.

What advice do you have for people who want to make changes but are confused about what’s really healthy?
Look for food in their closest form to how they were made in Mother Nature. Is it in a package that has a list of 25 ingredients that you can’t pronounce? Then your body won’t be able to recognize it either. Eat more plants made from nature, stay away from processed foods, but remember to have fun. Life is about balance and an occasional bowl of chocolate ice cream isn’t going to ruin a healthy eating plan.

Do you have a favorite juice recipe that you’d like to share?

A new favorite that I’m enjoying these days comes from my recent The Reboot with Joe Juice Diet Recipe Book. It’s called the Slim Grin – try to say that without smiling! It’s 2 pears, 1 handful of green grapes, 1 bunch of spinach leaves, and 1 cucumber. It’s a good way to get your greens with a sweet taste so it’s excellent for those new to juicing.
