National Eating Disorders Awareness Week: Feb 24-March 2

Posted by:

Everybody knows somebody.

That’s what the National Eating Disorders Association wants people to remember during this year’s observance of National Eating Disorders Awareness Week. From February 24th – March 2nd, NEDA encourages people to do “just one thing” to spread awareness about eating disorders. Those of you who have been following this blog for a while know that I struggled with both anorexia and bulimia a few years back, and it’s a struggle I still live with, in some capacity, every day. Nobody is exempt from the potential pitfalls of these disorders. They affect children and adults, male and female across all races and socioeconomic levels. And as society continues to encourage dangerous dieting practices, the prevalence of disordered eating is only likely to grow.

Last year I posted a list of resources that is still pertinent this year, including websites, blogs and books. New this year is the National Eating Disorders Awareness Week website, NEDAwareness.org, which focuses specifically on the week, the importance of awareness and how to get involved. You can read their Making Connections magazine, get information to share or find a NEDAwareness event near you. If you’re looking for statistics, there are some good lists on the Eating Disorder Hope website as well as from the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD).

I’ve posted information in the past on anorexia, orthorexia and eating disorders in general, and I’ll be posting some information from the NEDA site throughout the week, both here and through Facebook and Twitter. I encourage you to use your own blog and social media accounts to help increase awareness of the struggles many have with eating disorders. This is something that affects millions of people every single day. National Eating Disorders Awareness Week gives them a voice in the midst of a society obsessed with body image and eating. If even one person is helped by something that one of us posts, that’s one less person suffering and one step closer to ending this devastating epidemic.

If you or someone you know is struggling with an eating disorder, don’t hesitate to speak up and get help. There is hope. You’re not alone.
